Business Education/Information Management

July 1, 2017

Garnet Career Center’s Business Education Department was organized in January, 1971, as part of the Continuous Education Program of the Kanawha County School System. The school is in session the year round with classes arranged on a semester basis.  Students may enter the program in February and August.

Garnet’s Business Education programs are structured to enable the conscientious student to pass the Microsoft Office Specialist and CompTIA A+ exams.

A master certificate is issued upon the completion of the requirements of the Business Education Information Management/Microsoft Computer Application Specialist Program of Study.

Philosophy of Education

The goal of the Business Education Department is to provide a flexible, proficient, and inexpensive program for adults of all ages who have a high school diploma or equivalent, and who wish to enter or re-enter the business world with marketable skills. The program combines classroom instruction with an on-the-job learning experience that is consistent with student occupational objectives. Students are taught occupational competencies that are needed to acquire and succeed on the job, adjust to the employment environment, and advance in occupations of their choice.

Students are provided with training in the latest word processing suite and information technology skills: Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access) and CompTIA A+.

Consistent with the philosophy of the Kanawha County Board of Education, Garnet strives to provide a quality program of instruction with high standards for academic achievement. All students, regardless of race, sex, religion, marital status, national origin, economic or social status, have the opportunity to reach their maximum potential in acquiring life-long skills. Moreover, the Business Education program shall transmit the attitudes, competencies, and values that help students attain self-sufficiency, positive self-image, and readiness for positive work experiences.

Workplace Practicum/On-The-Job Training

A cooperative training experience is provided with the program.   The on-the-job training will be available with participating industry partners. Full-time students with satisfactory grades and good attendance will participate in the cooperative training experience the last part of the semester. As part of the job placement process, students may be required to submit to the following: fingerprinting, drug tests, credit checks, TB testing, and HIPAA training.

School Hours

Classes are arranged on a daily basis, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:15 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. CompTIA A+ classes will be in the evening. Some classes may be offered as Distance Learning to provide students to complete coursework on their own time. Individual class schedules will vary.

School holidays are in compliance with the Kanawha County School calendar except during the summer months. During those summer months, the Business Education Department is closed the last of June and beginning of July, dependent upon the KCS calendar.
